Plan Your Farm
Have you always dreamed of starting your own farm? But maybe you’ve struggled to identify how to plan your farm. Or what crops to grow to begin with. Do you want to grow your own vegetables and herbs, and enjoy the health benefits of your own produce too? Before you take the leap, there is are many questions to consider. The success of your farm depends on successful planning. So, simply follow these steps to make your dream a reality.
#1 Decide whether farming is right for you
A good way to do this is to draw on your knowledge of farming. Do you know about the labour involved, the techniques and how to plant, grow and harvest crops?
#2 Set goals
Before jumping into it, determine your goals for your farm. For example, you may want a hobby farm, which is a supplement to your full-time job and something relaxing you can do on weekends. Or, you may want your farm to make money, so you can quit your full-time job and become a commercial grower.
Then again, your goal may be to produce all the food your family will need through homesteading or self-sufficiency. Once you’ve set your growing goals you’ll be best placed to determine what planting products will suit you.
#3 Consider which crops you want to grow
The size of your farm can range from a half-acre with a small vegetable garden, to over 40 acres with cattle, dairy cows, sheep, goats, and acres of field crops and vegetables.
Some of your choices will be limited by your land and its resources. To make the best use of your land, determine exactly which crops you can grow in the space.
#4 Assess your land and resources
This involves learning about your land, exactly what is on it, and what you will be able to grow. Assessing your land gives you the information you need to plan your first year of farming.
#5 Plan your first year
This is where you marry your dreams with reality. Look at the list of crops you plan to grow. Research each crop to determine how to grow them and what will grow in your area.
